BOS Studio Takeover: a Roseb(l)ank Canvas for Creatives

From 28 to 30 August, the BOS Studio at Rosebank Mall became less of an installation and more of a canvas in progress.

We were invited to step into the space for the weekend, but the invitation extended beyond simply coming through to paint. It was an open call to make something, add something, and leave a mark

For us, there was something familiar about being back at Rosebank Mall. We’re regulars in the space, so getting to paint there again felt less like entering a new environment and more like returning to somewhere we already knew. We came through on Friday, came back again over the weekend, and in between the paint and spray cans, got to reconnect with friends who stopped by.

The energy of the BOS Studio came from that openness. There were no formal workshops or instructions telling you what the finished piece should look like. The walls were blank, the materials were there, and the rest was up to you.

Spray cans from @shelflifestore became part of the contribution, adding another layer to a growing collective portrait of Johannesburg. Around us, other people were doing the same; picking up a brush, making a mess, experimenting and figuring it out as they went.

It was a simple idea, but one that felt particularly Joburg: take an ordinary space, give people the room to create, and see what happens when nobody is too concerned with getting it “right.”

BOS called it a creative playground. For the weekend, it became just that.

The assignment was simple: creativity. And Johannesburg understood the brief.
